What to write in a digital wedding invitation

The information you cannot leave out

Without these five things a guest will have to call you, which means the invitation did not do its job:

• Who is getting married, in full names
• The date and the exact start time
• The ceremony venue and the reception venue, if they differ
• The deadline for confirming attendance
• A contact a guest can reach with a question

The information that prevents the most questions

None of the following is required, but each one removes a whole run of messages you would otherwise field in the weeks before the wedding.

A schedule for the day tells guests when to arrive and roughly when the evening ends. If there is a gap between the ceremony and dinner, write it down, because that is the number one question.

Describe the dress code in words people understand without searching for them. Instead of naming a code, describe what you expect, for example that the reception is on grass so heels are not practical.

Directions and parking help guests who do not know the area. A link to a map handles that without a description.

An accommodation suggestion helps guests travelling in. Two or three nearby options are enough.

If you have a gift list, link it from the invitation rather than writing about it in the text.

The RSVP deadline

Set the deadline three to four weeks before the wedding. The venue usually wants a final headcount two weeks ahead, and you need a few more days for the seating plan and final arrangements.

Write the deadline as a specific date rather than a period of time. A guest who reads an exact date responds differently to one who reads that they should confirm soon.

Expect that some guests will not reply even after the deadline and that you will have to chase them personally. That is normal and does not mean the invitation was unclear.
